Małgorzata Bany On Finding Novelty by Reimagining

Pilotis Platter was one of my first designs. It was released in 2015 and recently reimagined for Garde in LA and Summerland.
Its shape and method of production were inspired by modernist and brutalist architecture. At the time, it felt right to present the object in the most neutral tone, focusing on the form itself—with attention directed at lines, volumes and proportions. The prototypes were made in plaster as many other pieces I was working with at the time, and the chalky colour was something I associated with honesty and direct transition between prototype and final piece.
A few years later, I decided to introduce a limited colour range to my Pilotis tables. Pilotis Platter in Flint might have moved away from its plaster prototype but gained the colour depth of a shade between the ferns and wet rocks on the coastline.
Though I was initially sceptical, the change of colour brought the object once again closer to me and gained novel meaning without diluting the original design.
